a woman's quest to finally get her life in check

oy! what crazy 2 weeks!

So I've been MIA for a very good reason......I was interviewing for a job and then I got it!!!!!!

So life has been about going suit shopping, exercising, preparing for a new lifestyle and getting my shit together. If I may be honest....I am so scared! The job won't be too overwhelming, I don't think. But the whole working and being responsible and waking up early in the morning and being "on" all day.....haven't done that in too long. I know it will come back to me quickly but still....overwhelming and scary and oy!

I'll be fine, I'll be great at my job.....I'm just overwhelmed that I no longer will get to do what I want, my job will dictate that. Our apartment is overflowing with stuff we need to organize and donate since we are moving in about a month to a new apartment - where? we don't know yet! Oy! Do you see? I'm stressed out of my mind!

But luckily, I still make time to exercise so that get's it all out of my head and I can de-stress for about an hour or so.

you know what they say...fourth day blunder

so yesterday it was my choice
today it was my downfall
short-term downfall
i hope

yes, i am still in control but i had a bad day. no, not a bad day, just a not as productive as it could have been day. and that's ok.

i learned something today - i need to make sure that i get out of the house with craig every morning and get my day started early. soon enough i will have a full time job and i wont be able to get used to the mornings if i don't do it now. I need to condition myself for when i will be back in the field.
done.
tomorrow and next week -- i promise to wake up early and get up and out to start my day.

LET'S GO

and again on the third

so it's day 3 and I feel great!
I wasn't ready when Craig left the house - I went out on the porch to say good bye and noticed what a beautiful day it was. It made me so happy that I made myself a cup of coffee, grabbed the latest book I've been working on for let's just say a year (oy) and sat on the porch to read. I have to say, it was the first time in well over a year that I felt in control of my life. I wasn't taken over by the mesmerizing TV or the comfy couch....no...I was in control of my day and my life. I read, I had breakfast, I brought out my computer and did job searches. It was fantastic.
I didn't go out for a run. I made that choice on the porch. It wasn't because I had been lounging on the couch, or fell asleep for hours, or I was sucked in by 3 episodes of Desperate Housewives followed by 3 episodes of Grey's Anatomy. No. I made the conscious decision that today I was not going to run, I would do all of my other exercises but not run. There. I made a decision and stuck to it and more so, felt good about it.
I ready until lunch time. Made myself a great and healthy sandwich then decided to work out.

100 situps
40 ab rollers
40 rows on the cables
40 tricep rows on the cables
20 pushups on the cables
30 squats on the cables
3 sets of 10 bicep curls with 8lb weight
3 sets of 10 kick backs with 8lb weight
3 sets of 10 bridges with leg pull in on cables
played with 3lb pilates ball while watching afternoon TV

Best day yet!

a successful second day

I know technically it's not saying much, having completed only two days of training in a row, but for me it's a huge accomplishment. I am so proud of myself. I woke up early again, got dressed, had a protein shake and out the door I went to run/jog/walk a mile. AND on top of that, I really didn't feel well. Yes, I was sore from yesterday's workout but also I was feeling a bit sick. But I did it anyway!
So out I went and jogged just under a mile. I came home, had a protein shake and sat down on my couch for a minute and the next thing I know....it's 12:30 in the afternoon!!!! I guess I really needed it!
But like my mentor told me - it's not the end of the world, or your diet/workout/routine, if you make one mistake. Get up and continue along with better choices. So I did.
I made myself a decent lunch and got to working. I had an interview at 3 so I did all of my research and prepared myself for the phone call.
Research went well, phone call went real well (got a formal interview set up), and then I continued along with my workout routine.

3 sets of 10 leg lifts with ankle weights
5 sets of 1 minute pilates twist
3 sets of 10 knee to elbow touches on knees

cleaned up the apartment a bit

4 sets of 10 lunges with 10lb weight
3 sets of 10 squats with 10lb weights
3 sets of 10 lateral raises with 5lb weight
3 sets of 10 shoulder presses with 3lb kettleball

protein shake

not bad for day #2!

Doing real well

Since that mind altering last post I really have made a change. Eat somewhat better, go to classes at the gym that kick my ass and do something for myself everyday. I like this!
Yesterday Craig and I had a big fight that concluded with more life changing epiphanies (the good kind). I am in control of me, my body and my life. LET'S GO!
We went out and got me some cool workout clothes, a big gym bag and.....the Jungle Gym cables!!! Last night, Craig made me a Meal/Workout Regimen for today and so far I have kept up with it.

Got up with Craig and immediately put on workout clothes
protein shake
antidepressants
1 mile walk/jog/sprint
140 sit-up/crunches/ab rollers
protein shake

now it's time to apply to more jobs. Last week I applied to 2 jobs that I am excited about and already this morning I received an email to call in for an interview for the position I was really interested in. Am I allowed to say "IT'S HAPPENING????" soooo exciting. Even if nothing comes of this, at least I can say I got an email back. What a great start to a great week.

Craig measured me last night so I know where I am on this New Beginnings Monday.
Ribs - 31.5
Belly Button - 34.5
Butt/Hips - 41.5
Thighs - 24.5
Arms - 14

Oz says since I am 5'1'' = 61 inches tall my waist should be half of that = 30.5. So I have about 4 inches to loose off of my waist. Not too bad. The width of my arms and thighs really bother me, but that is all going to change real soon. So no worries!

Let's Go!

I updated my resume to reflect the summer job I had and searched for jobs to apply to. I then made whole chicken soup in our slow-cooker, tastes just like my dad's!
Made grilled pork with cucumbers for lunch then another mini workout

Jungle Gym workout:
4 sets of 10 rows
4 sets of 10 push-ups
4 sets of 10 deep squats

a little this and a little that but no snacking, can you believe it? You know, that commercial is true...you start your day off right and you continue making good decisions because you feel better about yourself. Although, like my great and wise mentor tells me, if you get a flat tire you don't pull over and take the other 3 off as well. You fix it the flat and move on. Same goes with making bad decisions. Get up, fix it and let's go!

What's next?
4 sets of 10 bicep curls with 8lb weights
2 sets of 10 push ups
2 sets of 10 triceps push ups

Yeah, I think I did really well today and what's more, I'm going to do it all over again tomorrow!

And what's even more....I liked it!

Fed Up

So I haven't been writing on the blog recently but I have been making changes to my lifestyle.
I go to Yoga and Pilates classes and try to do weight lifting. It's hard to do it on my own since I don't always know what I'm doing and Craig can't be there with me because it's the high season in his company and he comes home super late.
But I'm proud of myself. I try to eat right and always check the nutritional values of what I'm about to eat.
I haven't gone bike riding in about 2-3 weeks but when I did go, I always did 6.2 miles! That's impressive, I think.
Still weigh 150 pounds.
This month has been very busy; I was working 3 days a week, Craig and I both had birthdays and we had lots of visitors every weekend...which means we ate and drank a lot and took a lot of pictures. In looking through the pictures, I can't help but think really bad thoughts about myself. I'm actually pretty shocked that I weigh only 150 pounds. I look huge. I know it's not good to talk like that....but it's true. I know my body. I am little, only 5'1'' (there I said it, I usually add several inches!!!) and have a small frame. But recently, actually probably since I started going out with Craig, I just keep gaining and gaining.
I'm 27 and supposedly in my prime.
It's time to act like it.

Things to do:
Get my life in shape
How:
Being good to my body
Living in a organized and stress-free home
Connecting with the ones I love
Being true to myself
Finding a job that will make me shine

It's true, this can't be about my weight and only my weight. I have been depressed since we moved to NJ a year ago and everything went downhill from there. We left our families and friends, our support network, our jobs, everything that was familiar and safe. It was an adventure. And it has been. Luckily Craig and I are amazing together so we have each other to get through this adventure. It's hard when he is the only one that has a job. He comes home exhausted and I am full of energy because I have someone to play with. So it's time for me to change my lifestyle drastically. I can't keep locking myself in the house because I have nowhere to go and no one to see. I need to get out of the house and live my life for me and for my future. Let's go.
That might need to be my new motto.
LET'S GO!
no more being afraid, no more uncertainty, no more depression, no more excuses and no more failure. Time to take charge of my own life. I am the one in control of me so I should act like it.

(can you tell I've been watching Loosing It With Jillian Micheals?!?!?!?!)

LET'S GO

it's 9am and I am going to the gym. a little cardio and a pilates class. then i am taking the day head on and making it my own

Tuesday, June 15, 2010

the countdown begins

so i've been mia for quite some time now. both taking time to reflect and sitting on the couch. this is it. in 5 weeks i will be 27. and in 5 weeks i will loose 10 pounds. i want to commit to more but i want to make it feasible so i won't fall off the wagon again.
i fell off the wagon a couple of weeks ago but luckily it didn't drive away without me. i am ready to get back on and make a difference in my life.
what's changed? i went to boston to see my friends. they are my support network and needed to see them to regain control over myself. i needed to be with the people that love and support me and know me best. yes, my boyfriend fulfills that role but i needed that girlfriend bond. my trip reassured me that my life isn't falling apart - it just sucks right now but it will get better soon. i also discovered that my friends are all going through rough patches as well. that made me feel better in the sense that i'm not alone in going through some muddy water.
i also decided to talk to my doctor about getting antidepressants. he called it "situational depression" and told me it was completely normal for what i am going through right now - new state, new living situation, no friends or support network (face to face interaction), and no job......yeah, it's depressing. so i started taking the pills to give me that boost to get me off the couch.

here it goes...again....this time for real.....

today's plan:
water
exercise
vitamins
the rest is up to me.

ready, set......here i go

Day 20

Today I want to do something around the house.

Craig and I thought of a new plan of attack for me. I always make these ridiculously long lists of "things to do" for each day....inevitably, I would never finish everything on the list leaving me feeling that my day was spent do nothing. Well, now I am just going to make one statement about what I want to accomplish that day - and it can happen at any point in the day. Yesterday I wanted to exercise, and I did. Today I want to spice up our apartment....let's see if I can accomplish this one thing!

Up and oil pulled (day 33 of it!)
I was going to go to the gym, but then realized I have to work on the house (oh no, now it's just an excuse!)
Hung out, hung out, fell asleep and missed the chance to speak with my mentor
Spoke with my mom and found out my grandmother isn't doing well so they are flying to Slovakia this weekend. Craig and I decided that we will go to my parents this weekend and help them prepare for their departure
Cleaned the apartment
Decided to hang some floating shelves and add picture frames
Craig came home and loved it!
I made spaghetti and turkey meatballs from scratch!! It was delicious!
It was a good day!

Day 19

Hi.
Today I want to exercise.

Work up and as soon as Craig left for work I oil pulled (no watching TV)
Yoga class
I planned on going for a run but it is H-O-T out
Had a banana
Watched TV
Triscuits and Cheese
Fell asleep on the couch (back to my old ways, huh?)

Tuesday, May 25, 2010

Day 18 - let's pretend this weekend didn't happen!

Sorry to all (haha) of my readers for being MIA.
It's been a rough couple of days. Depression is hitting me hard no matter what efforts I make in taking charge of my life. I applied to 4 jobs last week, worked out, ate somewhat reasonably and yet I am in this tunnel of funk.Craig is doing everything he can and I still cry.
This weekend was supposed to "fix" all of that by us going to visit his sister and go to a ball game. Well it helped a little but not much. We still fought and I still cried. However, we did find out that Craig is on his own road to unhappiness at work and it's hard for him to muster up fake happiness to get me out of my funk when he is sinking deeper into his own.
Things will get better soon. I will be happy again. I know it.

Today I am going to read a book out in the sun. That will make me happy.

Wednesday, May 19, 2010

Day 17

Still a bit of a crappy day due to the weather, but I am not going to let that get to me....nor the tummy ache I still have from last nights' dinner! And my mom sent me a package of goodies from my grandma that should be coming in the mail today so I have something to look forward to. Craig's dad is coming in to town tonight for dinner so that will be a fun change.

Woke up with Craig and made him breakfast and lunch
Oil Pulled
Breakfast -- a glass of soy chocolate milk and a Special K protein bar
Yoga class
Just missed the UPS man so I had to hunt down my package (literally, I met him at his next stop after I stalked him through the operator!)
Lunch -- whole wheat pasta with sauce
Opened up my package and read through our mail
Snack - a chocolate bar (I couldn't help it, they're Slovak!)
Looked through the classifieds for a job - that's where I'm at ladies and gentlemen
Cleaned up the apartment

Tuesday, May 18, 2010

Day 16

I've been out of it these last few days. Still keeping up with what I need to but not as well as I should. I have a case of the reds. (Breakfast at Tiffany's anyone?) Craig is doing everything he can to get me out of it, but I'm still stuck. Depressed and stuck.

Even though it's raining today, I will do my very best to be my very best. An inspiring read from my life coach's blog always helps to put me right on track. MMT, you are my hero! Now I am aspiring to be more like you. Oh, how do you do it?

Woke up
Oil Pulled
Breakfast -- 3 Gluten Free Pancakes and rose hip tea
Grant Writing workshop (and didn't touch an ounce of the smorgasbord of gross but really yummy food or drinks)

Did a Yoga On Demand video

Day 12

Ok. So for real - today is a new start. After my talk with Craig last night I realize that things have to change. I can't keep this depression going. Craig thinks I can just up and change how I'm feeling and if not I should just get some drugs. Well, I don't think that's the answer. Drugs would make me feel better but I don't think they would help me get more friends, get a job or get in better shape. But I would be happier! Anyway.
So...today will be a great successful day!

My friend and now life coach :) has persuaded me to log my food on My Plate and it tracks all of your calories in and out. It's pretty awesome so I will be posting that information as well. Let's make this happen! Because of my height, weight and weight loss goals I should be eating 1375 calories a day:

Calories Consumed: 1410
Calories Burned: 295
Calories Remaining: 260 (let's not forget I didn't really eat lunch)

Thursday, May 13, 2010

Day 11

Ok, so yesterday went pretty well - except that I didn't take my vitamins again and I didn't eat any dinner. Bad mistakes, I know. But other than that, it went well. Oh yeah, I found out through the LIVESTRONG website that I am "seriously overweight". Isn't that wonderful news? Oy. It's so depressing to hear information like that but let's face it, I need to hear it so that I will make these changes for good.
I am a little sore from yesterday's yoga class so I'm not going to take a class today but I will workout on my own. I also have an interview this afternoon, it's just a volunteer position but it will get me out of the house at least.

7:30 - Woke up

Wednesday, May 12, 2010

Day 10

Wow, double digits, this is getting serious!

It was actually a pretty good day, especially when compared to yesterday. I got to chat with one of my good friends for 45 minutes, I found some pretty good job opportunities and I met potential colleagues or at least friends!!

Tuesday, May 11, 2010

Day 9

Another day.
I'm trying to make this new life style work, but it's not working. I chatted with my guy about this last night and he had all these great ideas as to what I should/could be doing. I can tell he really is trying to help me in a supportive way but for some reason I am just not responding well. He told me that maybe I need an eye opener to make these changes a real life style...my response...I've had the eye opener but I'm still the ol' me.
Ok, I know I said I wouldn't get into the details of my past but it's time to let it out. (Wow, it only took 8 days for me to give in!) It's not that I had a tough childhood, it was different. My parents emigrated from Slovakia when I was 4 and took a demanding job where their employer was hesitant about them having a child. They became the housekeeper/chef and landscaper for a wealthy family and they were worried about a small child potentially wreaking havoc on their collectible-full house. So I was on "lock down" in my room for the most part; not being able to run around, play outside, have friends over, or do other activities. I really think that this is the reason for my laziness. Now, I don't think I'm lazy. I think I am just comfortable with doing nothing, stemming from my childhood. I thoroughly enjoy doing things and am normally an outgoing active person. But this move to another state and not having a job or friends is making me resort back to my old ways. And I'm not going to lie, it's nice. For once to not have to worry is nice. But let's face it....this isn't going to last.
I need a job
I need to help my boyfriend support us financially
I need to get out of the house
I need to get a life!
And now that I have this time, I need to make the most of it. Now is when I can spend the needed time "fixing" myself and doing what I want/need to get my life in order. When I do finally get a job, I won't be able to do the things that I should be doing now. So why am I not doing these things?
What else has to happen in my life to make me want to change?
I've been unemployed since January of last year. In the meantime I have finished my Master's Certificate from an accredited university, moved to another state, went to visit my family overseas twice and basically became a homemaker. My guy (let's call him by his name, shall we?), Craig, is desperately trying to convince me that I have accomplished a lot in this past year but I just don't see it. I'm frustrated with myself for not doing the many things I could be doing in this "free" time.
I think I'm scared. I know I'm scared.
Scared of putting myself out there on the job market and being rejected. It's been so long since I have worked in my field and I am having my doubts. I miss it terribly, but I am second guessing myself if I have chosen the right field. I guess no one knows whether or not they are in the "right" field, but I got my Master's Certificate, so I might as well try my luck in. Well, unfortunately for me, I chose a field that doesn't really exist in this new state I am in. Museums in New Jersey.....that's a long shot. We live too far from NYC to commute (4 hours a day in a train is not my ideal) but Philly might not be too far (a little over an hour by car). And locally there are a couple of museums but they either don't have openings, I'm not qualified for the positions, or they are just plan boring. I know that at this point, I need a job. Almost any job will do. I was on unemployment for a year and then when I moved to NJ I had to cancel it. Now I am dipping into my savings to help pay the bills and even though I am in somewhat good shape, I hate that I am slowly depleting my savings. So I need a job. Badly. But I'm not putting in the effort I need to get a job. I had lots and lots of excuses. Too far, not high enough salary, not qualified, not interesting enough.....I could go on. But it's time to get serious. It's not fair to Craig. I do my share in taking care of the house. I do a good part of the day to day everything but now it's time for me to kick in more financially.
Anyway, that has nothing to do with my new lifestyle....oh wait, yes it does!
It's quite the vicious cycle I'm in. I'm depressed because:
I don't have any friends
because we don't go out
because we don't have any money
because I don't have a job
because I don't have any confidence
because I am not eating well and not exercising
and I am depressed.

So as I am sitting here, on the same spot on the same couch yet another day, I realize that it's 3 pm and other than the blog I really haven't done anything constructive today. Another wasted day? Maybe not. I'll try to make the best of the rest of the day. I have a phone meeting at 5:30, other than that....I will try.

7:30 - Woke up
10:30 - TV and internet research then oil pulling
12:00 - Snack -- 2 pieces of chocolate to hold me over as I am making pasta
12:30 - Lunch -- Whole wheat pasta and sauce
3:00 - TV and research and emailing friends -- I need to change something, this can't go on
4:30 - Snack -- A handful of Pringles
5:00 - Walk around the block and phone meeting
6:00 - Snack -- small chocolate and marzipan ball
6:30 - Dinner -- Barefoot Contessa meal (hey, it's hard to cook every night!)
8:00 - Tea and TV
9:30 - Sleep

In Conclusion:
Meals: 3
Snacks: 3
Water: just under 2 liters
Vitamins: No, again
Exercise: No, well, 2 times about the block (about a mile)

Monday, May 10, 2010

Day 8

Still no vitamins; I desperately need to work on that. Weigh In - (I'll do it weekly on Mondays) 149lbs. Technically I lost one pound...I guess that's an improvement. I decided I should measure my waist as well, that's what Dr. Oz says is the most important number. He says your waist should be half of your height. So my height is 61 inches and so my waist should be 30.5 inches. As of right now my waist is 34 inches and right below my waist is 39 inches. So I have at least 4 inches to loose off of my waist, but really I should loose 9. So along with taking classes at the gym, I will work on my abs at home in between doing nothing and nothing (you know what I mean) and try to do more cardio. I don't think there is anything special going on this week so I can concentrate on taking care of me, working out and job hunting.

1:30 - Lunch -- Homemade small egg, cheese and bacon sandwich
2:00 - Left for my parents
4:30 - Arrived at my parents
Now, I don't really remember all of the times which I ate and did different things, so I am just going to list it all:
2 shots of Rakia (Croatian liquor) (We are Sloval and it's a tradition to take a shot of alcohol to celebrate a safe arrival)
1 glass of rum and iced tea
2 beers
Cheese, salami and bread apps
Fried soft shell crab
Steak with Yucca and beans
Helped my mom cook Chinese Stir Fry for tomorrow
Hung out with Family
Played billiard with the Family
Had a little fight/discussion with my man about his smoking. I don't like him smoking for several reasons and he knows how I feel about it. My whole family smokes. My guy does not smoke in our house, when he comes home from work and not even on the weekends. However, when he is with my family he smokes as often as they do. Well the fight came about when he was packing a pack of cigarettes in front of me, I gave him a look (you know the look) and then he lit up right in front of me. It was a slap in the face, as if he just didn't care at all about my feelings and didn't respect me. So we chatted and figured things out. We're ok, of course.
Went to bed around 1:30 am

Day 3

Good Morning! Man, I am sore today; 2 1/2 exercise sessions will do that to you, huh? Well today is here and I am going to continue on my new yoga kick. Things to still work on...vitamins....come on now - it's super simple....just take the pill! I have a job today so I will be out of the house for the afternoon (hopefully that will help me stay away from the snacking.) I know I said I wouldn't bore you with my sob story but I do have to share this important fact; I am hypogylcemic - my blood sugar levels drop drastically when I don't take in the proper glucose or sugars while preforming activities. So I do have to eat frequently and a somewhat high sugar level to balance my low levels, otherwise I faint. So there's a tiny, but real, excuse.

Here's what I don't understand. I hate the way I look in those pictures on the right, yet I still eat like shit. Not to use this as an excuse, but I am getting my period this week so that is definitely making me crave more crap than usual but still....I need to practice restraint in a major way. Maybe it would help if I create a little lunch bag of food and snacks for the day as if I were going to work. That used to be helpful when I was working....but the problem is the kitchen is still accessible. Oy. I need help. Anyone want to raid my kitchen and take all the snacks???

Day 1

As my boyfriend told me last night, "tomorrow will be a great day because you have the ability to make it great." And it's true. Today is the first day of my new life....and it will be a great day!
Everyone has a past and a reason for becoming who they are today. I'm not going to tell my sob story of why I look the way I do or feel the way I do. I'm not trying to gain any sympathy, I just need to be held accountable for the 100th time I try to journal my way through possible weight loss. Speaking of weight loss, that's not my only goal. I want to be healthy. Technically, as my doctor would tell you, I am generally healthy; no diseases or viruses or genetic issues. My problem? My love of food and hate of exercise. Well, maybe not hate, just complete lack of desire to participate in any exercise-related activity. There, I said it.
But I realize if I don't do it now, I probably won't ever do it. And even more so, if I don't do it now, it's only going to get worse.
In a recent trip abroad I saw first hand how poor my cardio is. I wasn't able to do half the things my friends were doing without working up a sweat and loosing my breath. The time is now. (I've said that before, but this time I mean it.)
Several of my friends have lost weight preparing for their weddings, for the summer, for various other reasons. But I am loosing weight for me. I want to loose weight to be healthy. Technically, by the BMI charts, I am "overweight". I am 5'1'' and 150lbs. When I look at myself in the mirror, I don't have that crazy unrealistic view of myself. I don't think I'm "overweight" but I do think I am over the weight I should be for my health.
I want to be comfortable in my own skin. My boyfriend loves me and my body; he tells me daily that I should walk around naked more often. His positive energy is helpful but at this point I need more than "wow, you're sexy, I need "let's go to the gym, get sweaty and then take a shower together". I think that would get me motivated!
So here's my plan:
Everyday I'm going to log what I ate, what exercise I performed and what I actually did that day, all as honestly as possible. I need to do this. We just recently moved to another state and I have not yet found a job. My day usually consists of me waking up late, hanging out on the couch all day and snacking as I please. Meals usually consist of chips and salsa and chocolate.
THIS HAS GOT TO END.
Along with the logging of events I will begin a new regimen of healthy living. I am going to start taking vitamins, drinking 2 liters of pure water, continue to oil pull (an Ayurvedic method of swishing cold compressed sunflower seed oil in your mouth to help "pull" the toxins from your body), eat healthy veggie and fruit based meals, and try to limit my eating to 5 times a day. In addition, I am committing to 2 gym classes per week and some form of exercise everyday.
Wish me luck!
A healthy new me starts today!
This is what I look like on day one.....hopefully changes will happen in the near future!
